those darn greyhound teeth

Blue's getting her yearly dental cleaning (I've got that Wellness package at Banfield that covers one a year). She's only 4 1/2 and the vet said she's already got two incisors that need to come out. I was brushing every other day, then it dropped off to once a week plus some dental chews and the occasional rawhide strip. Besides going back to brushing every other day or every day and using that Oravet stuff, is there anything else anyone would recommend? I've just ordered some Greenies off of Amazon.

4 1/2 seems really young for having teeth pulled already.

Thanks,
Arwen

A few folks on the Greytalk forum recommended the spray or gel that's made by Petzlife. http://www.petzlife.com/

I haven't tried it, but am tempted. Does anyone here use it? Just like it's hard to brush those back teeth, I'm not sure how we'd get the Petzlife stuff back there.

It's probably the bad dental care early in their life that is taking the toll now. You're reminding me that we probably need to brush more often, too. Thanks --- S.

That spray is awesome. I don't use it currently, but I have seen 'the proof' in other dog's teeth. It really does work. But sadly, as your post subject says..greyhounds can have crappy teeth. And they do get pulled often. It sounds like you are doing everything right. She just must have really bad teeth.
But that spray is great and I do highly recommend it.

I haven't heard of it yet, but will do some research now.

Just becareful at the vet, greyhounds have to have less sedative than most dogs. I don't have the exact amounts or the drug protocol but I went to a power station of ours and talked to one lady who just lost one of her greyhounds the week before when she took him in for a teeth cleaning.

It was heartbreaking to hear about it. I sent her my greyhound books so she could use them as references for her other 5 greyhounds.

there is a salmon oil flavor of the petzlife gel....i would have thought it might be delectable :P, but the dogs HATE it. i would advise trying another flavor, if you decide to use it...

A friend of mine uses a spray that he highly recommends. You can check it out and order it at Getplaqueattack.com. He uses it on his two Pomeranian's teeth and he said they have "NO" plaque and their teeth are white as can be. I will order it for my six dog's as soon as I don't have to pay Doctor bill's.

I just bought some Petzlife from Petsmart yesterday. It isn't cheap, but if it works it is less expensive than a dental! Will let you know!
